Beyond Memberships: How Gyms Can Unlock Hidden Revenue Streams

October 31, 2025•4 min read

Most gym owners still see memberships as their main, and often only, source of income. Recurring memberships are the backbone of your business. But rely on them alone and you’re missing a world of opportunity.

To grow and stabilise your business, you need diversification: multiple income streams that complement each other, reduce risk and increase lifetime value per member. Here’s how to think bigger.

1. Premium and Tiered Memberships

Not every member wants the same thing at the same price. A premium or “platinum” tier adds value and lifts average revenue per member. It could include monthly PT or small group sessions, exclusive seminars, free or discounted recovery treatments, branded clothing or nutrition starter packs, and priority booking or extended hours.

The key is exclusivity. You’re not just selling access; you’re selling belonging. Premium members are often your biggest advocates, highest spenders and most loyal supporters.

2. Charge a Joining Fee, but Add Value

A modest joining fee helps cash flow and creates psychological commitment. But a fee with no visible value feels punitive. Make it an investment in their experience: guest passes, café credit, complimentary PT or group PT sessions, a branded welcome pack and a 30-day onboarding check-in. You’ll face far less resistance and start the relationship positively.

3. Personal Training and Small Group Training

PT should be one of your most profitable divisions, yet in many clubs it’s underdeveloped or poorly marketed. Small group PT can be even more powerful, combining PT accountability with the social side of group exercise at an accessible price. Four to six people per group, focused on outcomes like fat loss, strength or endurance. The trainer earns more per hour, clients pay less per session and the club makes more overall.

4. Nutrition and Supplements

Members spend money on nutrition; the question is where. Protein, pre-workouts, healthy snacks and ready meals can add significant revenue. Tie it to education with short nutrition workshops or meal-planning sessions, or partner with local meal-prep companies or cafés for branded meals and affiliate income.

5. Branded Merchandise

Gym-branded clothing isn’t just a logo on a T-shirt. It’s pride, and it’s a walking advert. T-shirts, hoodies, bottles, shakers and towels add revenue while reinforcing your brand. A small display by reception or print-on-demand avoids stock risk.

6. Facility Rental and Shared Space

Got a studio, treatment room or office empty for part of the day? Rent it to massage therapists, physios, osteopaths, yoga instructors or sports coaches, for a flat fee or revenue split. Rent your main space off-peak for dance, martial arts or corporate wellbeing sessions.

7. Group Programmes and Clubs

Weight-loss clubs, mum-and-baby sessions, teen fitness and “Back to Fitness” groups for older adults attract people who might never join a gym otherwise. Themed programmes help you market to specific groups, and once people find a community, they stay.

8. Education and Events

Workshops and seminars on beginner strength, nutrition myths, mobility for desk workers or mental wellbeing position your club as an expert hub. Charge a modest fee or include them in top tiers, and partner with local physios, nutritionists or mental health specialists to share costs.

9. Food and Vending

A healthy vending machine or grab-and-go fridge for drinks, snacks and shakes can quietly generate steady income. Even a small smoothie bar can deliver high margins and improve the member experience.

10. Corporate Wellness Partnerships

Local businesses want to improve wellbeing, reduce absence and lift morale. Offer tailored corporate packages: discounted memberships, on-site PT or lunchtime workshops. One contract with a medium-sized company can bring dozens of members and far more stability than one-off sales.

The Common Thread: Value and Experience

Every extra revenue stream must add value to the member experience. If it feels like a cash grab, it won’t last. When products and services genuinely improve outcomes, whether convenience, education, motivation or connection, you build trust and loyalty. That’s where the real profit lies.

Memberships keep the lights on. The extras create stability, profit and long-term success. Stop thinking like a gym and start thinking like a business with multiple channels of value. The best-run clubs don’t just sell access to equipment. They sell solutions, experiences and communities.
