Fitness technology has never been more advanced. Gym apps track workouts, log progress, sync with wearables, deliver personalised plans and give instant feedback. On paper, it’s the perfect solution. So why is real engagement so low?
Industry data shows that while 77% of members download a club app, fewer than 30% use it consistently after the first month. For training-specific apps, long-term use often drops below 20%. Clubs have tried better onboarding, incentives and more push notifications, yet behaviour stays the same. Which brings us to something interesting: sometimes the simplest tools create the strongest adherence.
Apps need navigating: menus, buttons, tabs, updates and logins. That’s fine for confident gym-goers, but for beginners and older adults it adds mental load, and when cognitive load rises, habit formation falls. A paper card has zero cognitive load. It’s obvious, visible and tied physically to the workout.
Behavioural science repeatedly finds physical cues are more reliable than digital ones for forming new habits. A programme card on the gym floor reminds members they have a plan. Apps need a behaviour before the behaviour: decide to open the app, navigate, find the workout. Most drop-off happens before anyone gets to the work.
For many new members the gym is already overwhelming. Older members in particular report fear of “doing it wrong” on an app, feeling judged browsing their phone on the gym floor, worry about tech failing and a preference for simple, tactile tools. A card reduces anxiety: it’s clear, structured and private.
That’s why many Gen X and Baby Boomer members stick to card-based programmes far better than apps. And even younger members often follow a physical plan better in their first 90 days, because the barrier is lower and progress feels more concrete.
Apps are brilliant for tracking long-term progress, integrating wearables, exercise demos, bookings, automated communication and nudging behaviour outside the club. But for adherence to gym-floor programming, the data is consistent: apps alone can’t drive engagement.
The best-performing gyms use both:
That blend creates the strongest outcomes across every demographic.
If digital programme uptake is low, stop fighting psychology and lean into it:
Members don’t fail because they lack an app. They fail because the behaviour needed to use the app conflicts with early habit-building. Programme cards remove friction, create clarity, support coaching, reduce anxiety and build confidence. Most importantly, they get used.
Sometimes progress isn’t about adding more tech. It’s about removing barriers. And a humble piece of card still beats an expensive app when the goal is simple: get the member to show up and follow the plan.
