One theme keeps coming up in our conversations lately: franchise support.
Over the past few months we’ve spoken to franchisees from established brands and emerging ones, people who’ve recently left franchise systems and others still inside them who are increasingly frustrated. Many of those conversations end up in exactly the same place. Not marketing. Not lead generation. Not competition. Support, or more specifically, the lack of it.
Most franchise brands put huge time, effort and money into recruiting franchisees. They build recruitment websites, attend exhibitions, run discovery days, produce brochures and spend significant sums attracting people into the network.
Yet once the agreement is signed and the doors open, support often starts to fade. Not always. There are brilliant franchisors who genuinely care about their franchisees’ success and stay heavily invested in helping them grow. But we’ve also seen systems where support becomes reactive rather than proactive. Franchisees are left to work it out themselves, they lose direction, performance drops and frustration builds.
The irony is that most franchisees didn’t join because they wanted complete independence. If they had, they’d have started their own business. They joined for systems, structure, accountability, support and experience to help them avoid mistakes and grow faster. That’s what they bought into.
Bringing someone into your network comes with responsibility. They’ve invested their capital, committed their time and trusted your brand. The sale should never be the end of the process. In many ways it’s where the real work starts.
The strongest franchise systems we’ve seen aren’t necessarily the ones with the best recruitment marketing. They’re the ones that stay consistently engaged with franchisees years after they join. They:
Strong support doesn’t just help individual franchisees. It protects the brand, improves unit economics, reduces closures and makes the whole network more attractive to the next wave of franchise partners.
If you’re reading this and feel you’ve lost some of that support, don’t assume you have to struggle through alone. A fresh pair of eyes can make a huge difference.
At Black Raccoon Consulting we regularly support fitness franchisees and franchisors with:
Successful franchising isn’t just about recruiting great franchisees. It’s about helping them succeed once they’re in the system. We’d love to hear your thoughts.
